On Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022, Ed Pope, vice president for human resources at the College of Charleston, sent faculty and staff the following message regarding parking on student move-in days:

Good morning!

We will welcome our students living in our residence halls and historic houses to their new homes on Wednesday, August 17, Friday, August 19, and Saturday, August 20.

The following is important information regarding move-in to our residence halls on Wednesday, August 17 and Friday, August 19.

The College will operate on a normal work schedule for both days and offices are expected to maintain appropriate coverage.

  • On Wednesday, August 17, please note that families will be parking in GG and PG after unloading. Please expect more foot traffic in the garage and drive slowly as you enter and exit.
  • On Friday, August 19, for those employees who park on campus and whose presence is not required on campus that day, managers are encouraged to allow employees to work from home or a remote location if it is appropriate. Allowing as many employees as possible to work remotely for the entire day would be very helpful as we need to open up as many spaces in the garages as possible. Of course, if an employee wishes to take annual leave (if available/eligible) for the day or partial day, that is up to the supervisor. Carpooling or public transportation are also potential options. If you have any questions, please consult with your supervisor or department head.

Special note to employees with PG Garage or WA Lot permits:

The block of St. Philip Street between Calhoun and Vanderhorst streets will convert to one-way (southbound) traffic Wednesday, August 17, from 1:30 – 6:30 p.m. and it will be closed on Friday, August 19; and Saturday, August 20, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Permit holders will NOT be able to access PG from Calhoun Street. If you need to access your permitted PG or WA Lot during these times, you must approach St. Philip Street at the intersection of St. Philip and Vanderhorst Streets. Then advise the officer posted there that you are a permit holder in order to access the garage. If you leave the garage or WA Lot during these times, you will be directed to make a right turn onto St. Philip street; you will NOT be able to turn left out of PG Garage or WA Lot. Expect delays entering or exiting the garage and please plan your day accordingly.

Keep in mind: New students and their families will be navigating the garages and other campus lots with hand trucks, carts, and luggage, and we want to make that process as safe and easy as possible for them.

Please call Campus Services HQ at 843.953.1100 if you have any questions about employee parking during move-In.

Thank you for your assistance as we prepare to welcome our students to campus!
