The College of Charleston’s magical season has come to an end, with San Diego State defeating the Cougars on Thursday, March 16, 2023, by a score of 63-57 in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Orlando.

The Cougars finish the season with a 31-4 record – the team’s best season since 2018-19 when they finished with a 24-9 record.

“I can’t be prouder of our team,” said Coach Pat Kelsey following the game. “Their professionalism, maturity, commitment to excellence every single day just amazed me.”

Ante Brzovic was high scorer for the Cougars with 12 points and eight rebounds, followed by Ryan Larson with 11 points and Dalton Bolon with 10. In addition to spearheading the Charleston defense, Jaylon Scott contributed nine points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Brzovic said the team played hard, but just did not get the bounces.

Coach Pat Kelsey led the Cougars to its best record ever this season.

“We did not finish the way we wanted,” Brzovic said. “But we will regroup and be ready for next year.”

After the game, Kelsey told the seniors that their legacy in the program will last for decade. “These seniors led a team that lit our city on fire. Fire.”

“I cannot put into words what this team means to me,” said Larson after the game. “Quite frankly, it’s probably the most special basketball season of my life. It is all credit to my teammates and coaches.”
