The College of Charleston Jewish Student Union/Hillel is recognized as one of the “Top 7 Hillels You Haven’t Heard Of” in the world’s largest circulated Jewish magazine – Reform Judaism. It is part of the 9th Annual RJ Insider’s Guide to College Life.
Here’s why we think we’re noticed nationally:
1. We surprise people.
The College of Charleston isn’t traditionally thought of as a Jewish school, but Jewish students make up nearly 10 percent of undergraudates and the Jewish Student Union/Hillel is the most active student organization. It is not a membership organization, so students become a part of the community the minute they walk through the door, no matter whether it is their first of hundredth time.

2. We’re building a kosher kitchen.
Construction is currently underway on a vegan/vegetarian kosher kitchen that will be open for the 2015-2016 school year. It will be part of the College’s meal plan, open to students with alternative, environmentally sensitive and kosher eating preferences.

3. Students are in charge.
Programs are planned and executed by talented student leaders and a dedicated staff team, who create an array of activities and events, including two free meals per week (three per day during Passover). JSU/Hillel also organizes social action events and Israel-related programs.
4. You’re always home for the holidays.
We observe all major holidays and even have student-led services on Shabbat. It’s just like being home – or better!
There are two vibrant historic synagogues within walking distance of campus, and transportation is provided to other synagogues that are farther from campus. Each place of worship represents a gateway to the larger Charleston Jewish community.
5. We’re part of the Jewish Studies Center.
The JSU/Hillel is located in the Jewish Studies Center, where students take academic courses. It’s truly a hub of Jewish activity that offers the opportunity to schmooze with professors, the local Jewish community and other students.
