The Office of Multicultural Student Programs and Services (MSPS) at the College of Charleston recently moved from Calhoun Street to the more centrally located space at 14 Green Way, adjacent to the Sottile House.
Rochelle Johnson, director of MSPS, is excited about her office’s new location in the heart of campus.
โThis space is more accessible for students currently participating in our programs and more visible for students who are interested in becoming involved,โ she says.

14 Green Way was previously home to the Center for Sustainable Development, which is now located at 207 Calhoun St. The historic building on Green Way has rooms for study groups, a shared space for prayer and meditation, and access to outdoor spaces.
Sayvon Lee was introduced to MSPS through the SPECTRA program and says the Multicultural Center has been a home away from home. Most days, he can be found in the new building assisting the MSPS Mentoring Matters coordinator with events or in his new role as the incoming summer assistant head SPECTRA leader.
โThis new location will be more welcoming for students who want to stop by to study or talk or meet with one of the groups like the Black Student Union (BSU), the Asian Student Association (ASA) or the Hispanic Latino Club,โ says Lee.
William Chase, director of visitor services and volunteer outreach for the Office of Admissions, says the new location will be a frequent stop for Charleston 40 tour guides, CofC students who give tours to prospective students and their families.
โWith this new centralized location, guides will have the ability to physically stop in front of the location and highlight the many programs and services that make MSPS such an impactful and essential place,” says Chase. “The guides will emphasize the importance of this new location and CofCโs commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive campus community.โ
MSPS will hold an open house in late February for the campus community to visit the space and learn more about their programming and support services. Make sure to check out Cougar Connect for all the upcoming MSPS events for the spring semester like Motivational Monday, First Gen Friday and Manifest your Dreams. Information about multicultural graduation celebrations, which take place in May prior to commencement exercises, will be sent to students in April via their College of Charleston email.
