The College of Charleston Department of Public Safety is scheduled for a site-based assessment as part of its voluntary participation in a program to maintain law enforcement accreditation by verifying it meets professional standards.

Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) Inc., the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures; administration; operations; and support services.

As part of the site-based assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, Aug. 1, 2022, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Due to COVID-19 protocols, the session will be virtually conducted over Zoom, with sessions being limited to 10 minutes per person. For Zoom information, contact the Department of Public Safety.

Agency members and the public are also invited to offer comments by telephone at 843.953.5615 on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022, between the hours of 11:30 am. and 1:30 p.m. Telephone calls will be limited to 10 minutes. Comments will be taken by CALEA assessors Michael Rein, of Rutgers University, and Jeffery Crisp, of Piedmont Technical College.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments concerning the College of Charleston Department of Public Safetyโ€™s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155, by phone at 703.352.4225 or by emailing CALEA at calea@calea.org (add College of Charleston Department of Public Safety (SC) to the subject line).

Emails, written comments and telephone calls should address the agencyโ€™s ability to comply with CALEA standards.

A copy of the standards is available to view at the College of Charleston Department of Public Safety located at 89 St. Philip Street, Charleston, South Carolina, 29424. The accreditation program is administered by Accreditation Manager Sergeant Richard Gillard, who can be reached at 843.953.8456.
