Betty Beatty, longtime supporter of the College, loves connecting with the โBeatty Bunchโ scholars and is relieved sheโs not part of the selection committee.ย ย
โI would want to give a scholarship to all the students,โ she says with a smile. โItโs too hard to choose!โ ย
Beatty and her late husband, Guy, always believed that access to education was essential, and for the last 25 years, the Guy E. and Betty Beatty Scholarship Fund has provided nearly 140 students with access to an education at the College. Each year, 10 high-achieving incoming freshmen with plans to major in business receive a four-year scholarship and become Beatty Scholars. ย
โWe wanted to give others the opportunity to do what we couldnโt,โ says Beatty of the initial spark to create the scholarship in 1997. โMy husband and I couldnโt afford to go to college. Guy was a farm boy with no education from the hills of Virginia, and he worked all the time.โ ย
Guy was determined to be successful and started working as soon as he graduated from high school. He quickly rose through the ranks at 3M and at 29 years old left the company to start his own real estate business, eventually focusing on commercial real estate development. Generous by nature, the Beattys began their philanthropic work as soon as they were able. ย
โGuy was likable and could talk to anyone,โ says Beatty. โHe connected with people everywhere he went.โย
The Beattysโ connection to the College began when daughter Susan enrolled in the School of Business in 1986. โIt wasnโt long before we saw a need for more scholarships,โ says Beatty.ย
In 1998, Guy was invited to join the School of Business Board of Governors, and in 2001, the couple made the lead charitable donation toward the construction of the Beatty Center, which opened its doors in 2007. Today, the School of Business at the Beatty Center serves as the nucleus for approximately 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students.ย
Jody Bell, a rising Honors College senior majoring in finance, is one of the more recent students who have benefited from the Guy E. and Betty Beatty Scholarship.ย
โIf I didnโt have the support of this scholarship, I wouldnโt have been able to take an absurd amount of credits every year as I experiment with different fields,โ says Bell. โIf I didnโt have this support, I wouldnโt have the ability to spend a good 20 hours a week valuing companies with the Investment Society. If I didnโt have this support, I probably wouldโve been working Monday nights and been unable to take Professor Brittonโs Impact Investing course โ and who knows where Iโd be right now if not for that class and the epiphany it provided me?โย
Alexey Bogomolov โ03 was one of the early members of the Beatty Bunch and says the scholarship was instrumental in obtaining his undergraduate degree.ย
โIt served as a foundation for all my future career endeavors,โ says Bogomolov, who works in data analytics. โIt provided necessary financial support, built confidence and established significant relationships on and off campus.โ ย
In 2016, Bogomolov established the Beatty Alumni Scholarship to demonstrate to the Beatty family that the Beatty Bunch appreciates its unwavering support. Through the scholarship, Beatty Bunch alumni help extend and honor the Beatty familyโs continued commitment to the College.ย
โThe Beatty Scholarship offered me the unique opportunity to remain flexible during my academic career resulting in calculated risks, big dreams and ultimately the ability to pursue a career in energy and external affairs that I love,โ says Kristen Beckham โ07, director of external affairs at BHE GT&S, a Berkshire Hathaway Energy company. โWithout the Beatty Scholarship, it is unlikely that I would have been so well prepared for the life and career I found after my time in Charleston. What the Beattys have done to support students at the College of Charleston, and specifically at the School of Business, is extraordinary.โย
Students like these remind Beatty of the enduring value of the scholarship. โItโs very satisfying,โ she says, โto help young people do what they want to do with their lives.โ
