Need a new look for 2015? Something classic, yet updated and modern? Well, we’ve got just the thing, and right in time for the holiday shopping season. As 2014 comes to a close, try sporting one of the College of Charleston’s new license plates, available from the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
Learn how to order a plate, including how to reserve one of the first 100 numbered College of Charleston plates.
Now you may think it difficult to part with your standard-issue “Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places” South Carolina sunset tag, but consider the jealousy you’ll inspire in fellow motorists as you cruise down the road with a license plate featuring a redesigned College logo. And more than half of the registration fee goes to the College’s unrestricted scholarship fund.
Imagine, if you will, the back of your car decked out in this:
But maybe you’re not the type to wear your Cougar Pride on your tailgate. That’s okay. When you’re an automobile owner in South Carolina, you have lots of license plate options, or about 170 of them, to be semi-precise.

Got a religious bent? Then go with an “In God We Trust” plate. Are you more secular? Then there’s the “In Reason We Trust” plate. Really, there’s something for almost anyone, even if you happened to be captured in combat (“Prisoner of War” plate”) or define yourself by how much you enjoy swinging a racket (“Play Tennis!” plate)
The South Carolina DMV lets you advertise your support of the S.C. Cattlemen’s Association, lets you boast your affinity for singer Jimmy Buffett through a “Parrothead” plate, and also let’s you share your love of the official state dance through a “Shag” plate. You can also choose among 29 designs featuring colleges and universities, some of which are not even in South Carolina.
But for some of us, only a College of Charleston plate will do. The DMV issued its first College of Charleston plate in 1994, and its design has been modified slightly over the years.
But now there’s something new to try. New College of Charleston license plates will be available to drivers in February 2015 for as low as $70 for two years. The unrestricted scholarship fund at the College of Charleston receives $40 of the registration fee.
