The School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs is hosting its seventh annual World Cultures Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 26, 2015, in the Stern Center Garden. The event is free and open to the public, so come enjoy international food, music, dance and culture!
With the goal of bringing various cultures and traditions from around the world to the Charleston community, the World Cultures Fair provides the opportunity to sample dozens of cultures without taking so much as a step off campus.
Hundreds of attendees are expected for this trip around the world. With over 30 tables displaying crafts, foods and information about CofC student clubs and international programs, the festival will represent nearly every culture and language taught at the College.
A highlight of the fair is the International Food Contest, featuring international dishes prepared by faculty, staff and students.
Throughout the day, student clubs and LCWA faculty and staff will serve authentic foods and provide cultural experiences, and each hour of the festival will highlight a different food theme: 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. is Thai, followed by Italian hour at noon and French hour at 1:00.
Another highlight is the talent show, which provides students with the opportunity to get artistically involved in the languages and cultures they are studying. With student, faculty and community musicians and performers, the show will feature capoeira, belly dance, Chinese lion dance, acro-yoga, songs and much more.
Check out the World Cultures Fair Facebook page for more information, a schedule of events, a list of the talent show participants and photos from previous fairs.
The entire College community is invited to wear festive or traditional dress to represent different cultures, not necessarily one’s own, for the event.
The School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs prepares students to become knowledgeable, engaged citizens in an increasingly complex and interdependent world. Home to one of the most comprehensive language programs in the Southeast, as well as in-depth programs in international and cultural studies, the school presents courses that are global, multicultural, interdisciplinary and comparative. Study-abroad programs in many countries around the world enhance the school’s academic offerings.
The Stern Center is located at 71 George St. In case of rain, the event will be held in the Stern Center Ballroom.
