And earlier this month, the College of Charleston – which already had established a Joseph P. Riley Center for Urban Affairs and Policy Studies – made him the first recipient of its Simons Medal of Excellence, given to honor those who excel in civic design, historic preservation and urban planning.
Valerie Morris, dean of the College of Charleston’s School of the Arts, draped the medal around Riley’s neck at the end of a long day for the mayor.
