All College of Charleston students enrolled in the MBA program recently participated in the James Island Connector Run benefiting the Gavalas Kolanko Foundation, which provides scholarships for College of Charleston students with disabilities. Recognizing the importance of community involvement, all 24 MBA students raced, volunteered their time, or made donations. MBA student Richard Wilkerson hands out water to walkers and runners. Dr. David Desplaces and Dr. Thomas Kent, who teach in the MBA program, also volunteered their time and participated in race-day activities.
Community involvement is valued by the School’s deans and faculty who recognize the role it plays in building relationships and fostering unique learning experiences. For the MBA program, service leadership is an integral part of the program as it continues to grow and gain recognition.
“We feel that giving back to the community is an essential component of the School of Business MBA experience,” says Christy Dose, student and co-chair of the MBA Association. ”As future business leaders, we are conscious of what it means to be good corporate and community citizens and to show social responsibility through active engagement.”
The next outreach effort for the MBA students is the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program this holiday season. The students are planning their own outreach event for the spring semester.
