Brian McGee
College of Charleston President Glenn McConnell has named Brian McGee as Provost and and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs.
McGee, a professor of communication at the College since 2004, has served in a variety of academic and administrative posts at the College, including six years as chair of the Department of Communication and four years as Chief of Staff. He has served as Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs for the past year.
“Brian has served very capably in this position, making significant organizational and administrative changes in Academic Affairs since moving to the provost’s office,” McConnell said in a statement to the campus community. “From my perspective, Brian has been a hands-on academic leader, who has been actively engaged in working to address many of our institutional challenges.”
McConnell added that McGee was selected after discussions with the deans of the academic schools, other academic leaders and with many members of the faculty. “In the course of those consultations, I learned that Brian was a widely respected faculty leader. Moreover, it became evident to me that many faculty, after seeing an array of externally hired provosts come and go, were pleased to consider the possibility of an experienced internal candidate. While I carefully considered the merits of a national search, I ultimately concluded that a search would be inconsiderate of external candidates – and wasteful of our valuable institutional time and resources – when a strong internal candidate was available.”
McGee earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech communication from Southern Illinois University–Carbondale and a Ph.D. in communication from The Ohio State University. An expert in debate and political communication, McGee’s previous faculty appointments were at the University of Louisiana-Monroe, Texas Tech University, and Spalding University.
