Come learn about the cool and dynamic things that can happen on our planet and the Solar System – and get your fossils evaluated by an expert – at the College of Charleston’s Earth Science Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 14, 2015.
Hosted by the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences and the CofC Geology Club and open to the public , the free event will feature a variety of hands-on exploration stations for all ages. Activities will include Lava Races, Augmented Reality Maps, a Fossil Search and Fossil Dig, an Earthquake Table, an interactive walk of the Solar System and much more!
The event will take place on the Second Floor of the College’s School of Sciences and Mathematics Building, 202 Calhoun St.
The Mace Brown Natural History Museum will be open for tours. In addition, Brown, the museum’s curator, will be on hand to identify your fossil finds.
“Mace Brown will be identifying any fossils people want to bring in, “ says Erin Beutel, associate professor of geology. “This may be important in light of all the erosion from the floods as new fossils are unearthed.”
At 6 p.m., John Chadwick, assistant professor of geology, will show new images and discuss amazing discoveries from recent missions to Earth’s planetary neighbors in a talk titled “The Awesome Planets: New Results from NASA Missions to Pluto, Mars, Saturn and Earth’s Other Sibling.”
Refreshments will be available following the talk.
