Sarah Chayes, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s Democracy and Rule of Law program, will be the featured speaker during the College of Charleston Political Science Spring Convocation.
This convocation, which is an annual event hosted in part by the Department of Political Science, will begin at 3:30 p.m. on April 13, 2017, in the Stern Center Ballroom.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
Chayes is the author of Thieves of State: Why Corruption Threatens Global Security. She is internationally recognized for her innovative thinking on corruption and its implications. Her work explores how severe corruption can prompt environmental degradation, terrorism and revolutions and their violent aftermaths.
Before joining Carnegie, Chayes was a special assistant to retired Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2007-11. In that role, Chayes traveled across the globe with the admiral and participated in decision-making on Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Arab Spring.
She was also an award-winning correspondent for National Public Radio.
The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Center for Public Choice and Market Process.
