The College of Charleston will observe World AIDS Day with a number of activities, including a display of panes from the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The panels will be on display in the rotunday of the Marlene & Nathan Addlestone Library from December 1 through 8. Admission is free and open to the public. The Addlestone Library is located at 205 Calhoun Street. Library hours.
Launched in 1987, the Quilt was originally created as a tribute to individuals in the San Francisco community that had been lost to AIDS. The Quilt now contains more than 44,000 individual panels and is considered to be the largest community art project in the world and the NAMES Project Foundation (located in Atlanta, GA) serves as its custodian. It continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the impact of the AIDS pandemic.
The College will also be hosting a Candlelight Vigil on Tuesday, December 1 at 6:00 p.m. on Rivers Green (behind the Addlestone Library). And AIDS activist Cleve Jones will speak on Monday, December 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Stern Center Ballroom.
