The College of Charleston’s Bonner Leader Program is hosting its fourth annual Engage and Empower Awareness Week from April 2 through April 5, 2012. Throughout the week, Bonner Leaders will hold a series of activities and discussions to bring awareness to various social issues. All events, which are held on the College’s campus, are free and open to the public. After each event, information will be presented on how students and citizens can engage in direct action to alleviate these problems.
Everybody’s Business
Monday, April 2, 3:00 p.m., School of Education, Health, and Human Performance Alumni Center (86 Wentworth Street)
Access to affordable housing is an issue that impacts everyone. Speakers from the City of Charleston’s Department of Housing & Community and the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity will be on hand to talk about how their organizations are helping to provide affordable housing for everyone. Light refreshments will be served.
Hear my story: Human Trafficking Knocking at Your Front Door
Monday, April 2, 6:00 p.m., Maybank Hall, room 100
Hear the story of a victim’s personal experience about how she was rescued from domestic sex trafficking and the transition back into society. There will be free cupcakes provided by Neet’s Sweet’s, an organization that helps human trafficking survivors re-enter the workforce.
Age of Neglect: Spotlight Issues of the Elderly
Tuesday, April 3, 7:00 p.m., Robert Scott Small Building, room 252
A panel of professionals will speak on social security and affordable housing. After the panel discussion, there will be an opportunity to connect with organizations that work with the elderly. Light refreshments will be served
“What would Tarzan do?” | Animal Advocacy Issues
Wednesday, April 4, 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m., Stern Center Garden
Drop into an informative expo that will exhibit a variety of tri-county animal organizations. The promotion of animal advocacy is the driving force for this event. Each organization will have contact information for attendees to learn more about volunteer and adoption opportunities.
America in Crisis | Water Issues
Thursday, April 5, 7:00 p.m., Stern Center Ballroom
There will be a discussion on issues surrounding inadequate access to water people face in many countries, water ownership, and Americans’ abuse of water. Light refreshments will be served.
Bonner Leaders participate in a four-year civic leadership and development program highlighted by regular leadership training and reflection activities. At the College of Charleston, Bonner Leaders perform upwards of 300 hours of community service and leadership development training over the course of the school year. In exchange, these students receive a $2,000 stipend in their financial aid package, which helps them afford their college education.
