It will not be a lazy summer for 13 College of Charleston students. That’s because these rising sophomores and juniors were recently awarded summer internships through the Career Center Internship Award program.
According to Jim Allison, executive director of the College’s Career Center, these students not only received a stipend to help defray the cost of their internships, but they also received an educational framework to help them make the most of their internship experience. The internship program is designed to provide students with an academic credit or non-credit summer internship and is open to all students regardless of their major.
“This cohort-style learning environment provides an educational framework which strengthens the student experience through a series of professional development trainings intended to help students plan for, engage in, and reflect upon their internship,” says Allison. “The goal of this award is to assist students to ‘dream big’ with their internship and career goals, while helping to eliminate potential financial barriers for those who otherwise may not be able to pursue an internship experience.”
A total of 39 students have participated in the program since it first launched in 2016.

One of the students taking part in the program this summer is Maggie Carpenter. She is an international business major in the Honors College and will spend her summer working as a recruiting and marketing intern at Prudential in Charleston.
“I picked this internship because not only will it further my skills related to the field of marketing, but it also gives me a look at what goes into recruiting talent,” she says. “Because I’m working for a company with a variety of products and services, I also get to learn about other business sectors such as finance and real estate.”
Carpenter says she will be conducting local market research, collaborating with the firm’s talent acquisition manager to recruit financial advisors for the state of South Carolina and working with other interns on a marketing project throughout the month of July.
