President Andrew T. Hsu sent the following message to the College of Charleston community on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019, regarding the appointment of an interim police chief:

Dear Campus Community,

As you know, Chief Robert S. Reese will be retiring on September 1. I am very grateful to Chief Reese for his 30 years of service and his many contributions to the College of Charleston.

While we search for a successor to Chief Reese, we will need transitional leadership in the Department of Public Safety.

Former Deputy Chief William F. Herkert Jr., who left the College in April, will return as interim chief of public safety. His first day will be Monday, September 2.

Interim Chief Herkert served as deputy chief from 2016 to 2019. He has more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement. As a former leader within our campus community, he will provide a steady hand for the College as we search for a new chief of police.

I look forward to working with Interim Chief Herkert and ask that you all welcome him back to campus in this new role.

Sincerely,

Andrew

Andrew T. Hsu, Ph.D.

President
