In recognition of Banned Books Week (Sept. 22-28, 2019), the College of Charleston is hosting a panel discussion titled “Banned Books that Shape(d) the World” on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.
The event, organized by South Carolina Poet Laureate and adjunct English professor Marjory Wentworth, will focus on issues surrounding banned books and censorship, issues regarding free speech on the internet, and hate speech on college campuses. Wentworth is currently teaching an Honors College colloquium course of the same name, which asks students to examine literature suppressed on political, religious, social and sexual grounds, as well as the origins of book banning in western culture and contemporary issues around internet regulations.
