The College of Charleston is hosting a three-part Critical Issues in Education series designed to examine a diverse array of issues related to equity in education. The series is being organized by the President’s Community Advisory Board (PCAB), a 23-member group made up of people from campus, the community and across the state.
The following panels will be held from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. at the Charleston County Library Main Branch Auditorium (68 Calhoun St.). All are free and open to the public.
Panel One: March 10, 2014
Theme: Well-educated young people: The most valuable resource for future growth in South Carolina.
Panel Two: April 14, 2014
Theme: Strengthening educational partnership through increased cultural competency, understanding of diverse learning styles, and motivating effective classroom leaders through growth opportunities.
Panel Three: May 12, 2014
Theme: Parents as advocates for effective education and thriving children.
“Education has long been a topic of debate,” says Leroy Lewis, community outreach coordinator. “Our three-part Critical Issues in Education series will do more than merely raise awareness; we want to ignite a discussion that will inspire advocacy and research leading to significant improvements in educational and political policy, practice and outcomes that remove disparities throughout the educational arena from pre-K through college.”
The 23 members of the President’s Community Advisory Board are diverse in, nationality, race, creed and sexual orientation. The group advises the president on ways the College might serve campus and the community. The panel discussion themes are a starting point to get all segments of the community talking openly about educational issues.
