In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston School of the Arts will feature works by two distinguished American artists, both natives of South Carolina.

The exhibition, The Insistent Image: Recurrent Motifs in the Art of Shepard Fairey and Jasper Johns, pairs new work by Charleston, S.C.-native Shepard Fairey and a survey of prints produced by Jasper Johns, who spent his early childhood in Allendale, S.C. The exhibition runs through July 12, 2014.
Both Fairey and Johns recycle graphic elements in their work, bringing new meaning to these repeated fragments through fresh juxtapositions and associations.
Mark Sloan, senior curator and director of the Halsey Institute, said the Halsey is best known for showing the work of emerging and mid-career artists. But the new exhibition is an opportunity to “highlight the accomplishments of two native sons as a way to demonstrate the fact that important contemporary art can originate anywhere,” Sloan said.
