College of Charleston political science professor Max Kovalov will be speaking on the current situation in Ukraine for a special program of the World Affairs Council of Charleston. The event will be held Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. in Arnold Hall (96 WentworthSt.). The event is free and open to the public.

Kovalov teaches courses on East European politics, comparative politics and international relations.  Born in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, Kovalov holds the Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma.  His dissertation focused on political institutions, protest politics and electoral fraud in post-Communist states.  He is preparing a number of articles for publication on the relationship between populism and democratic quality in the Czech Republic, Poland and Ukraine.

Moderating the program will be Bill Lavery, the current secretary of WACC and a professor emeritus of Russian and East European history at Furman University.
