On June 13 and 14, 2014, the College of Charleston will welcome more than 150 girls age 10 through 17 for Geek Squad Summer Academy. They’ll learn about the latest technology in a fun, interactive learning environment.
“This is the third year we’ve hosted the event, and many of the girls are excited to return,” says Christine Moore, senior instructor in the College’s computer science department. “We want to move them beyond being mere consumers of technology, and into the greater roles of being producers of technology.”
Geek Squad Summer Academy is a national program sponsored by Best Buy, and locally co-sponsored by Junior Girls Day Out Project and the College of Charleston.

This year’s class will include: building computers from the ground up, LEGO competitions, robot designing and operating, digital music designing, digital film/movie designing, 3-D printing, and social media etiquette and rules.
Across the nation, there is an emphasis on engaging students in STEM areas, with the idea that early engagement helps to increase their abilities and confidence that they can succeed in the sciences. With the mind-blowing technologies on the horizon such as smart cars and 3-D printing, the Summer Academy helps to position students to be impactful players as these innovations continue to emerge.
