For 12 months, College of Charleston alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends came to Addlestone Library to work on the Cistern Yard LEGOยฎ model in recognition of the institution’s 250th anniversary. By the end of 2020 the model was complete and ready for a new home.

With the help of the Collegeโ€™s Facilities Management team, the 7-foot by 9-foot model made the move in January from the library to its new home in the lobby of the Stern Student Center.

Based on building refurbishment plans provided by the College’s Historic Preservation and Community Planning program, the model’s blueprints were created using the LEGO design software LDraw. Comprised of more than 18,000 bricks, the buildings of CofC’s iconic Cistern Yard are roughly to scale. For perspective: Randolph Hall has 57 layers of both bricks and plates, while Towell Library has 36 layers and Porterโ€™s Lodge has 26 layers.

Members of the CofC community as well as the general public are welcome to stop by the Stern Student Center, located at 71 George St. on the corner of Glebe and George streets, to view the model. The lobby is open Monday โ€“ Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. The College requires that anyone on campus wear a mask and practice social distancing.
