To make things easier and more sustainable for College of Charleston employees, Campus Services has updated the parking permit application process for the 2022–23 academic year. These changes are outlined below.

1. Automatically Renewable Permits

As in years past, faculty and staff who already have a parking permit do not need to apply for a permit for 2022–23. This year, those who use payroll deduction for their parking permits do not have to do anything else to pay for their 2022–23 permit.

2. Permanent Hangtags

Starting this year, the parking permit hangtags will have a permanent number, eliminating the need to print new ones each year for employees who remain in the same surface lot/garage. This will reduce physical waste and put resources toward permit-free parking management (through license plate recognition) in the future.

3. New Permit Options at Wentworth Garage

Some of the options currently offered at St. Philip Garage will now be extended to the Wentworth Garage (WG), including:

  • afternoon/evening permits that are valid after 1:45 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends
  • evening-only permits that are valid after 4:45 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends
  • part-time permits that are valid for specific days of the week only
  • monthly permits, giving temporary employees and adjunct faculty options other than paying in full or via payroll deduction

Campus Services is excited about these changes and what they mean for the College of Charleston campus and employees. While the majority of employees will not need to complete a permit application, all faculty and staff should determine which below option best suits their situation and follow the instructions associated with it.

Options for Employees Who Currently Have Permits

If you would like to stay in the lot or garage to which you are currently assigned:

You do not need to take any action, and you will not need to apply for a permit for the 2022–23 academic year. You will automatically be reassigned to your current location. You can expect your assignment letter with further details about the automatic renewal no later than July 8, 2022.

If you would like to park in a different lot or garage than the one to which you are currently assigned:

You will still be assigned to your current location; however, you may send a wish list request to campusservices@cofc.edu, which will be kept on file in case a space becomes available in your desired location(s). (Because the B Lot remains closed for the School of the Arts renovation, it is unlikely that many surface lot spaces will open up for the 2022–23 academic year.)

Options for Employees Who Do Not Currently Have Permits

If you would like a regular permit for one of our surface lots or garages:

Complete the parking application and email it to campusservices@cofc.edu. Because of very limited surface lot availability, please include at least one of the parking garages (AG, PG or WG) among your four choices. Employees whose applications are received on or before July 29 can pay for their permits online in advance of the 2022–23 academic year and have their permits sent via USPS to their home addresses. (Note that, if you have payroll deduction, payment will happen automatically.) Employees whose applications are received on or after July 30 can pick up their permits in person at Campus Services HQ (162 Calhoun St.), Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m., on or after Aug. 15, 2022.

If you will not be on campus all five days of the work week and would like a part-time permit for PG or WG:

Complete the application for a part-time parking permit and email it to campusservices@cofc.edu. All part-time permits will need to be picked up in person at Campus Services HQ (162 Calhoun St.), Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m., on or after Aug. 15, 2022. You may park in your selected part-time garage (PG or WG), pull a ticket and then pick up your permit at Campus Services HQ. You will be able to exit using your Cougar Card upon paying for and picking up your permit.

Seniority (length of S.C. state service) remains the only factor in parking assignments. All permit reassignments from parking garages to surface lots will be managed through the wish-list process, and the wish list is assigned based upon seniority. Once an employee is assigned to a surface lot, they will not have to reapply for that lot each year, as long as they continue to pay for that permit.

Contact Campus Services HQ at campusservices@cofc.edu with questions about parking and/or transportation.
