In addition to announcing the newest members of its executive committee, the College of Charleston Staff Advisory Committee to the President (SAC) is soliciting self-nominations for several vacant seats.

The new SAC Executive Committee members are:
  • Chair: Kate Tiller, Senior Associate Director for Student-Athlete Success/NCAA Senior Woman Administrator, Department of Athletics
  • Vice Chair: Rashad Towns, Associate Director of Operations and Maintenance, Facilities Management
  • Secretary/Treasurer: Joy Heinzman, Associate Director, Department of Residence Life
  • Outgoing Chair: Charissa Owens, Director of Diversity Education and Training, Office of Institutional Diversity
In addition, these subcommittee chairs have joined the executive team:
  • Inclusion, Belonging and Wellness: Jeff Worartanadharm, IT PC/Network/AV Technician, Division of Information Technology
  • Membership and Elections: Charissa Owens, Director of Diversity Education and Training, Office of Institutional Diversity
  • Professional Growth, Leadership and Lifelong Learning: Melanie Greene, Administrative Assistant, Center for Partnerships to Improve Education, School of Education

“It was an honor to be elected to serve our staff as the chair of the committee,” says Tiller. “SAC is excited to expand on the momentum built in the last year and is grateful for the work from those who cycled off the committee over the summer. Our meeting schedule is set, and we can’t wait to get started!”

Tiller also encourages staff to nominate themselves for the following vacant seats:

  • Permanent At-Large Seat: Any permanent full-time, non-instructional staff member from any department who occupies a numbered state line may self-nominate for this at-large seat. The term ends on June 30, 2024.
  • Temporary At-Large Seat: Any temporary full-time, non-instructional staff member from any department who occupies a numbered state line may self-nominate for this at-large seat. The term ends June 30, 2023.
  • Institutional Advancement Seat: Any full-time, non-instructional staff member in the Division of Institutional Advancement (IA) who occupies a numbered state line may self-nominate for this seat. The term ends June 30, 2023. Staff members may self-nominate for both the IA vacancy and the at-large vacancy.

The self-nomination form is available via Microsoft Forms, and the deadline for self-nominations is 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022. Nominees should be willing to commit to meeting as an entire committee at least once a month and to meeting with their chosen subcommittee at least once a month. Organizational unit representatives are also responsible for bringing critical information from SAC back to their represented units as well as voicing concerns from their division up to SAC. Anyone elected to fill a vacancy is welcome to nominate themselves for re-election for the usual term in a regular election.

Hosting several events throughout the year – including the annual Celebration of Staff where staff accomplishments are celebrated and the recipients of the annual Staff Awards are announced – SAC represents employees across all units of the College, including approximately 1,000 full- and part-time exempt and non-exempt staff members. The purpose of SAC is to advise the president about staff opinions concerning matters of importance to the staff and institution, to receive the president’s requests for advice and counsel regarding matters relevant to the staff, to increase awareness of the staff’s contributions to the College, to promote the recognition of outstanding staff and to advocate for ongoing initiatives supporting employee success and well-being.

Employees must self-nominate by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, for consideration, but if you know a colleague that you believe would be great for SAC, email Dustin Roberts, assistant director of the First Year Experience and a member of SAC’s Membership and Elections Subcommittee, and he will reach out to your colleague to encourage a self-nomination.
