On Oct. 1, 2022, the College of Charleston began offering Paid Parental Leave (PPL) as a new benefit of employment.

This benefit provides up to six weeks of PPL for eligible employees who give birth to a child or are the primary caregiver for a child placed with them for adoption. It also provides up to two weeks of PPL for non-birthing co-parents, for non-primary caregivers of a child placed with them for adoption, and for employees who foster a child under age 18 in the custody of the state of South Carolina.

“The Office of Human Resources is really excited to offer this new employee benefit,” saysย Ed Pope, vice president of human resources. “It’s a wonderful benefit that will help support our employees and their families, and advance our efforts to enhance employee wellbeing and success.โ€

To be eligible for PPL, employees must be in a permanent full-time equivalent (FTE) position, and the qualifying event (birth, placement for adoption or foster care).

To apply for PPL, employees must submit a Request for Paid Parental Leave application (via DocuSign), available on the HR Paid Parental Leave webpage. Applications should be submitted 30 days in advance of the qualifying event, to the extent possible.ย Employees requesting PPL will be required to submit documentation to HR confirming the qualifying event and relationship to the eligible employee within 30 days of the qualifying event.
