Suzanne Austin, College of Charleston executive vice president and provost, shared the following message on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022, regarding the deans of the School of the Arts and the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs returning to faculty status in the 2023–24 academic year:

Dear Campus Colleagues,

The 2023-24 academic year will see School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs Dean Tim Johnson and School of the Arts Dean Edward Hart ’88 returning to faculty status.

Dean Johnson will complete his seventh year as LCWA interim dean and dean. In this role, he was the first Classicist in more than 40 years to serve as a dean at the College. Under Johnson’s leadership, LCWA has grown to be the College’s academic hub for global fluency, attracting new students interested in careers around the world with opportunities including study abroad, international internships and leadership programming. Johnson also oversaw the formation of the John Edwin Mroz Global Leadership Institute, through which the College is gaining national and worldwide distinction.

Dean Hart will complete his third year as SOTA dean. During his time as dean, Hart led the development of the school’s branding as the “Artistic Heartbeat of Charleston.” Under his guidance, the Simons Center is undergoing an extensive renovation that will help to better showcase the school’s incredible programs and increase engagement within the city’s vibrant arts and cultural scene.

Both Dean Johnson and Dean Hart will go on sabbatical when they complete their tenures as deans before returning to campus as faculty members.

I want to thank both Dean Johnson and Dean Hart for their contributions to the College. Details about the searches for their successors will be shared soon.
