Suzanne Austin, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the College of Charleston, shared the following message with the campus community on Monday, June 13, 2022, announcing the Collegeโ€™s new associate provost for student success:

 

Christopher Korey, associate dean of the School and Sciences and Mathematics and professor of biology, will assume the role of associate provost for student success on July 1, 2022.

As associate provost for student success, Korey will head the Office for the Academic Experience, which provides students with educationally purposeful activities that lead to deep learning, integrated social and intellectual development, and engagement with local and global communities. He will lead eight units and multiple programs, including the Academic Advising and Planning Center; the Center for Academic Performance and Persistence; the Center for Excellence in Peer Education; the Center for Student Learning; First-Year Experience; New Student Programs (including Charleston Bridge, iCharleston, Orientation, and Parent and Family Services); REACH; and Veteran and Military Student Services.

Korey, who joined the Collegeโ€™s Department of Biology in 2003, has been an active member of the campus community, collaborating on several university initiatives and supporting efforts to improve the college experience for students.

Korey has served as co-director of the Program in Neuroscience (2010-2011) and director of the First Year Experience (2012-2017). He has also been faculty fellow for the Center for Academic Performance and Persistence (2018-2020) and has served as associate dean for the School of Sciences and Mathematics for the past two years.

An accomplished educator, Korey has received numerous awards and recognitions including Faculty Member of the Year ExCEL Award for the School of Sciences in Mathematics; the William V. Moore Distinguished Teacher-Scholar Award; the S.C. Governorโ€™s Distinguished Professor Award; the Faculty Member of the Year ExCEL Award for the Honors College; and the Gordon E. Jones Distinguished Achievement Award for the School of Sciences and Mathematics.

Under Koreyโ€™s leadership, the College will be well positioned to promote student success, retention and timely degree completion.
