In the College’s close-knit community of about 10,000 undergraduates, you may think it would be hard for the 20% involved in fraternity or sorority life to make a difference. However, the fraternity and sorority members at the College of Charleston are rewriting the narrative.
These students truly show up for their people, contributing close to 11,000 hours of service in 2022–23 to support their community and the causes within it. And, with a whopping $156,474 raised among the College’s 28 nationally recognized organizations during the 2022–23 school year alone, these students have benefited numerous local and national organizations, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House and Be the Match! And they’re not slowing down, either: At the 2023 Pep Supper in November, they broke the fundraising record ($54,120 in 2018), raising $60,120 for Lowcountry Food Bank to support children and families of South Carolina coastal counties with food assistance programs.
So the next time you see the dolphin mascot of Delta Delta Delta, the wild purple violet flower of Sigma Kappa or the azure and gold colors of Alpha Tau Omega, know that behind these Greek letters lives a community of dedicated students eager to give back.
The numbers speak for themselves: The time and funds CofC fraternities and sororities are giving to the community all add up to a huge impact!
